The week's featured image celebrates the 20 years of service and retirement of our groundskeeper, Mr Michael Adams, pictured here with his wife Jodie, Mrs Melbourne, and Mr and Mrs Stevens.
The College staff come together on Wednesday to celebrate the milestone of 20 years of service and the retirement of our groundsman and maintenance man, Mr Michael Adams.
Michael told the story of how he and his wife, Jodie, attended the first community meeting in 1994 hosted by the College's founder, Mr Robert Nicholls, where the idea of starting a private college on Tamborine Mountain was first proposed. At the time, Michael and Jodie's children were in the local primary school, but there was no option for secondary schooling on the mountain. Michael said the idea was met with so much enthusiasm from the group of local parents who attended that Mr Nicholls announced that TMC would have to start! The next year Tamborine Mountain College opened and a few years later Mr and Mrs Adams sent their children to TMC for secondary schooling.
In 2000, Michael started working at the College, as he puts it, "in a part time capacity for just a little while, because I was going to move onto other things." 20 years later, Michael said that it was such a wonderful place to work that he never did move on!
To say that Michael is our groundsman and maintenance man doesn't really sum up the role that Michael has played building the College up to where it is today. Wherever you look around the College, you can see something that Michael has had a hand in building, adapting or creating. From the stage in the hall, the deck in the Primary area, classrooms, to the chess board, snackshop, sheds, the handball courts, drama props, the picnic tables - the list would fill a whole edition of this newsletter!
Michael has been part of the fabric of the College for two decades and his friendly, can-do attitude has been a staple of the day-to-day running of TMC. The College will not be quite the same without him and we all wish Michael and Jodie all the best in his retirement.
Mrs Melbourne and Mr Adams stand on the newly-named bridge, Adams' Arch, near the bus stop. Michael built Adams' Arch many years ago and renaming it in his honour is a fitting tribute.
Thanks for your efforts with Readathon. Amazingly, we have already passed our initial school target of $1000 AND $2000 so it's been revised to $3000!
Thank you to those families and students who have registered and already begun fundraising as part of the 'Readathon' challenge. The aim is to read as many books as possible and raise money to help families affected by Multiple Sclerosis. We have already had to revise our school target TWICE due to our excellent fundraising. All Primary students have been informed of this very worthy cause and encouraged to register, record the books they've read (including writing book reviews) and fundraise. To do so, they need to be registered by a parent or family member if you have not already done so. The challenge started on Saturday (1st August) and will run the duration of the month. Please register your child for the challenge using the link below (under the school's name and your child/ren's year level) and sponsor them what you can. We have also shared the link on the school Facebook page:
https://www.msreadathon.org.au/register-2020
There will be prizes awarded for class & student reading and fundraising efforts. Thank you in advance for your continued support.

Week 4 - Brain Teaser answer
If you have 30 white socks, 22 black socks and 14 blue socks scattered across the floor in the dark, how many would you have to grab to get a matching pair?
4 Socks are needed.
If the first 3 are all different colours, then the 4th one HAS to match at least one of them!

Time feels as though it has moved in strange ways this year. Some months were drawn out, others flew past. For our Year 12s, Semester 2 seems to always pass by in a blink. We have fewer than 30 school days of Year 12 classes remaining. Fewer than 60 school days until their graduation. This was the first cohort of students to complete Prep in Queensland, the first group to enter Year 7 as part of high school, the first group to go through the new Senior Assessment and Tertiary Entrance (SATE) system, and of course, the first to complete Year 12 during a pandemic (and hopefully the last!).
The determination and resilience of these students is inspiring. So while we are preparing for mock external exams, SWOT Vac, and external examinations, we are also hard at work to ensure the Year 12 Formal and Graduation is befitting this remarkable group of young men and women. We appreciate the patience of students and parents as we adjust our Formal plans. Rest assured we will provide clear direction in the next few weeks on how the Formal will proceed. It will look a little different this year as Safe Plans must be followed, but it will truly be a special occasion.
Mrs Fiona Stevens
Here we are at the end of the middle week of Term 3 and it has been wonderful to be able to provide a 'near normal' schooling experience for our students and staff so far this term. It has been joyous to see the children back at school, learning and playing with their friends - something that we no longer simply take for granted. The teaching staff have put a great deal of effort and consideration into their planning to ensure that the children are in as good a place as possible, considering the disruptions in Term 2.
Next Tuesday the Prep - Year 3 students will run a small sports carnival at TMC. This is the first year where we have split the athletics carnival between Prep - Year 3 and Years 4 - 12. The Prep - Year 3 sports carnival will focus on fun and involvement, rather than competition and house points. We hope to instill a love of fun competition in the children before they move into Year 4 when they become eligible to qualify for district level sports. Due to COVID restrictions, we are unable to have parents attend, but we do promise to share lots of photos from the morning next Tuesday.
It has been a joy to also see the continued rehearsals of the Primary production of The Wizard of Oz. At this stage, we hope to still run a live performance or two, but with reduced numbers in the audience and some rules about who is able to come along. Even with the challenges of this year, we are still finding a way to make things work and adapt whenever needed! I would like to thank the staff and students involved for keeping this production moving along.

A 16 year old has just stood trial for the fatal stabbing of his father. Twelve jurors are taken into the bleak jury room. It looks like an open and shut case - until one of the jurors begins opening the others' eyes to the facts...
Tamborine Mountain College’s 2020 Drama Excellence Production, Twelve Angry Jurors is fast approaching with just over three weeks until opening night.
Tickets are free and available from https://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/tmc-drama-excellence-performance-12-angry-jurors-tickets-116552931957
Due to COVID19 restrictions, we're only able to have 35 audience members per show, so book your tickets before they run out!

Our Primary students had their first Wizard of Oz dress rehearsal this week, they were very excited to practice being in character wearing their full costumes. It was all hands on deck so to speak this week with year 7 Art & Secondary students Talia Criss, Zoey Adam & Elijah Fern working diligently to paint the witches castle.
Primary Props department club held at Wednesday lunchtimes by Mrs Noel & Mrs Newman worked on additional props such as the Good Fairy's crown and the poppy field. Mrs Visser worked over Wednesday Sports with Secondary students preparing the cast for their face painting.
With such a successful afternoon everyone is looking towards our next full dress rehearsal at the end of the term in week 9. Thank-you to all staff and students for your support in our Primary play

TMC has many quiet achievers in many different categories. Whether it be the arts, stem, music or sport, our students are always striving to achieve their best. Nowhere is this more evident than in the achievements of Caitlin Ward.
Caitlin is a rising star of equestrian and competes in the showjumping discipline. She has been competing in showjumping for 3 years, but has been on the back of a horse now for 12 years. So with a bit of quick math we can work out that she first started riding at the tender age of 4.
Equestrian’s draw is one of independence for Caitlin. “It’s just me and the horse. No one else is there” she stated. It is obvious that a single minded focus and concentration is needed when you are navigating a 700 kg horse over 1.2 m high jumps at a fast rate of knots. “It’s important to stay relaxed and calm … it can be scary going over the jumps, depending on the size.”
Caitlin was recently awarded Champion Rider at the Oxenford Pony Club’s Gymkhana and is looking forward to competing at the nationals next year in Sydney.
